Building a Business by Relationships, Not Hustle A Conversation with Garrett Maroon

Most agents start their careers believing the path to success is paved with endless hustle: longer hours, more leads, more closings. But what if true success isn’t about more, but about meaning

That’s exactly what we explored in our latest podcast conversation with Garrett Maroon, founder of Business by Relationships and author of The Balanced Breakthrough. Garrett’s story is one every real estate professional needs to hear a story about redefining success, protecting your peace, and building a business that serves your life instead of running it.

When Hustle Stops Working

Garrett built an incredible business by most standards hundreds of homes sold, strong numbers, constant growth. But behind those numbers was exhaustion. He was missing moments with his family and losing the joy that drew him to real estate in the first place.

In his words, “Success to me is not selling 200 homes. Success is taking my kids to the trampoline park and knowing I was present.”

That realization became the turning point that inspired The Balanced Breakthrough and the work he does today, helping agents replace pressure with purpose.

The PDA Formula: A Better Way to Build

One of my favorite parts of our conversation was Garrett’s PDA Formula a practical framework for creating a sustainable business:

  • Predictable: Build systems and routines that make results consistent, not chaotic.
  • Dollar-Productive: Focus on the activities that truly drive revenue, not just busywork.
  • Aligned: Make sure your business fits the life you want to live; your faith, your family, your priorities.

It’s simple, but powerful. When you start evaluating your business through these three lenses, everything changes. You stop chasing every opportunity and start choosing the right ones.

Why Relationships Win Every Time

Garrett states that the strongest businesses are built on relationships, not transactions. Agents who lead with connection checking in, celebrating milestones, genuinely caring create loyalty that can’t be bought with ads or automation.

As Garrett puts it, “Your job isn’t to be amazing at everything. It’s to be amazing at what you were made for.”
When you operate from that mindset, relationship marketing stops feeling like work. It becomes a reflection of who you are.

Turning Relationships into Referrals

Referrals aren’t just lucky breaks they’re the result of consistent, intentional follow-up and authentic communication. Garrett shared that people refer when they feel seen and valued, not when they’re pushed.

Timing matters, but so does tone. Ask for referrals in moments of gratitude—right after a successful closing, or when a client thanks you for your help. Keep it natural and personal.

And remember, automation can help with reminders, but it should never replace genuine connection. That’s what keeps a client for life.

Faith, Family, and Protecting Your Peace

One of the most impactful parts of our talk was Garrett’s emphasis on faith and family as non-negotiables. He’s unapologetic about building his business around what matters most—and the results speak for themselves.

He reminded us that “Some seasons are for running. Others are for resting. That’s not weakness, it’s wisdom.”

That’s something I think every entrepreneur needs to hear. Rest isn’t a reward—it’s a requirement for longevity.

What Agents Can Take Away

If you’re feeling overworked, stretched thin, or just disconnected from the joy of your business, this episode is your reminder that you can do it differently.

Start by asking yourself:

  • Is my business predictable, dollar-productive, and aligned?
  • Am I nurturing relationships or just chasing new leads?
  • Does my definition of success match the life I want to live?

The answers to those questions might just lead to your own balanced breakthrough.
