Rest, Relaxation, and Real Estate: Tips for Transitioning Smoothly into Vacation Mode

Summer is here, and the call for a rejuvenating vacation grows stronger. As a real estate agent, you tirelessly devote yourself to others, often neglecting your own well-being. But let’s rewrite the script for a week. Take out your planner and let’s schedule some well-deserved downtime. After all, the purpose of a vacation is to unwind, enjoy quality moments with loved ones, indulge in extra sleep, and bask in the sun’s warmth.  So, pack your beach bag, grab your sunglasses and sunscreen because you are on your way to a truly relaxing vacation.

To ensure a smooth transition away from work, it’s essential to be proactive and organized beforehand. You have planned your week, your destination and who is going. Keep in mind that a vacation doesn’t always require traveling to a specific location. Simply dedicating a week to staying at home, indulging in leisurely activities like reading, working on home projects, grilling delicious meals, or binge-watching your favorite shows can create a memorable and fulfilling vacation experience. Remember, it’s important to prioritize taking time off, regardless of the destination. You truly deserve it!

Start by conducting a thorough review of your inventory, ongoing closings, and any pending business that requires organization before your departure. Next, identify the most suitable agent to cover for you during your absence. If you’re part of a team, discuss this matter with your team manager. As a solo agent, carefully consider who among your colleagues would be the best fit or seek assistance from your broker to find a suitable replacement.

Once you’ve identified the agent who will step in for you, arrange a lunch meeting to discuss the specifics of your ongoing tasks, potential challenges that may arise, and how they should handle them. It’s crucial to have clear communication about compensation and any other important details to ensure there are no misunderstandings regarding their role in managing your business.

If you have an assistant, engage in a conversation with them about their potential support while you’re away. Determine if they can manage your email, voicemail, or any other responsibilities. Introduce your assistant to the designated agent in charge during your absence and ensure they exchange contact information to facilitate seamless coordination.

Create an auto-respond email for your vacation, clearly stating the dates of your absence and providing contact information for emergencies. Include the name, email, and phone number of the designated person to reach during your time away. If you prefer, mention that you will respond to emails once a day, but don’t feel it is necessary. Ensure your message is transparent about the level of availability others can expect during your vacation.

Remember, your top priority should be your current clients. Prior to leaving, make it a point to call them and discuss the latest updates on their property. Address any concerns they may have regarding your absence, provide details about who they should contact in case of emergencies, and share any other important information they may need. Follow up with an email to summarize the conversation and reiterate key points.

Lastly, allocate a day before your departure to organize your business affairs, address pending tasks, and pack your bags. It’s crucial not to work on the day before your vacation, allowing yourself time to get everything in order and mentally prepare for your time away.

Now, it’s finally time for your well-deserved vacation. Take this opportunity to fully enjoy your time off, allowing your brain to unwind and your body to reap the benefits of this break.

While on vacation, make a conscious effort to disconnect from your phone, and encourage those with you to do the same. If you must tend to work-related tasks during your vacation, manage your time wisely by waking up an hour before everyone else or dedicating an hour after everyone has settled for the night. However, it is crucial to avoid working while you are with your family and friends. Promise yourself that you will fully shut down and embrace the chance to reconnect with yourself.

I do recommend setting aside some alone time to reflect on your life, your current situation, and consider any changes you may desire. Carry a journal with you to jot down your thoughts and allow yourself the freedom to ponder your personal and professional goals. Write them down, engage in brain dumping, and explore new ideas. This is an excellent opportunity for reflection and planning, which can be truly nourishing for the soul.

One last tip: allocate a day or two upon your return to get back on track. Use one day to unpack, handle laundry, attend to your pets, pay bills, sort through mail, and catch up on emails and phone calls. By planning and preparing in advance, you’ll avoid unnecessary stress before leaving, and by taking a day to regroup upon your return, you’ll find that your vacation has served its purpose: rejuvenating your mind, allowing you to enjoy your personal life, and reigniting your excitement for your business.

Now, get ready to embrace the joy of a well-deserved break from your busy work life. I sincerely hope these tips help you truly relax and reconnect with life.
